About Grey Light Productions

Grey Light Productions is a London-based theatre company dedicated to producing and promoting new writing for the stage. We are currently developing projects with our Writer in Residence Sam Thomas, as well as premiering some of the best in new American writing on the London stage through our American Voices series.

For more details about who we are, see Company and Crew below.

The Company

Grey Light was founded in 2006 by director Georgina Guy and producer Ben Monks, following their award-winning work with Sam Thomas at the Cameron Mackintosh New Writing Festival. Sam went on to become Grey Light’s Writer in Residence and the company was launched at the King’s Head Theatre with a run of three of his plays in February / March 2007. BANK took centre stage and was produced alongside Ticky Tock (winner of the ACTSwansea Playoff 2005) and an extract from Telemaphone, a work in progress. Press reaction was unanimously favourable:

“A triple whammy.” The London Paper

“Engaging…impressive…this is a real success. The plays tread [their subject matter] with style — very well cast and excellently performed.” Islington Gazette

“On the brink of their big break...Grey Light are bursting to set the stage alight.” Sara McCorquodale, Sutton Guardian

The production explores “the core of real human emotion while projecting a high level of comedy… a pure delight and well worth catching.” Natalie Li Camden New Journal, Islington Tribune

Grey Light’s next London production, Uncle Barry, a new comedy by Sam Thomas, was staged at the Blue Elephant Theatre from 2nd - 20th October 2007. The production, directed by Georgina Guy and designed by Hilary Statts, was named one of BBC London’s “shows not to miss” and The Stage observed, “It sounds absurd and yet the parallels with reality are painfully true... [in] this well-crafted study in male incompetence.”

We are currently developing LoveSpoons, the new play by Sam Thomas, which will receive its first public performance with a workshop at Camden People's Theatre on November 28th 2008. See Current Productions for more details.

In 2007, Grey Light partnered with the New York Metropolitan Playhouse to produce a series exploring new American writing on the London stage. The project forms an unprecedented UK presentation of some of the most vital and as yet unheard voices in new American theatre, presented through workshops, readings and fully staged productions. Five new American plays were presented at the Greenwich Playhouse and Blue Elephant Theatres in March 2008. The series continues with ongoing script development work, and we are currently scheduling further productions for 2009 — keep an eye on Current Productions for more information.

'**** — an incredible achievement....perfectly capturing a cynicism in aspiring modern America.'

News Shopper on The Monkey's Paw, part of the American Voices series.

As a company we are highly energised by working with writers who have something new to contribute to contemporary theatre. We are always looking to expand the parameters of our work by establishing links and developing new projects with national and international theatre-makers, and always interested to hear from anybody with an interest in the company or the work that we do.
